High-Distraction Training
Off-Leash & High-Distraction Training in Westchester
What's Going On With Your Dog?
Step 1 of 3
Quick Answer
High-distraction training at Sit Means Sit Westchester teaches your dog to respond reliably to commands regardless of what is happening around them — other dogs, people, cars, or wildlife. Through our Day Train program and progressive distraction exposure, dogs learn that your commands override the environment. This is the critical “proofing” step that most training programs skip.
About Our High-Distraction Dog Training
Does your dog know "sit" perfectly at home, but act like they've never heard the word the moment they see a squirrel? You're not alone. Many dogs perform reliably in low-stimulus environments but fall apart the instant a real distraction appears — another dog, a jogger, a bicycle, or even a plastic bag blowing across the sidewalk. This is one of the most common frustrations for dog owners in Westchester County, and it's completely fixable.
Why Distraction Proofing Matters
A dog that only obeys in the backyard is not a trained dog — they're a managed dog. Real obedience means your dog responds to you in any environment, under any level of distraction. This is called "proofing," and it's a critical step that many training programs skip entirely. At Sit Means Sit Westchester, proofing commands in real-world environments is built into every training program we offer.
How We Train for High-Distraction Environments
Our trainers use controlled, progressive distraction exposure through our day training programto teach your dog that your commands override everything else in the environment. We work in a variety of settings — including our Valhalla facility and locations throughout Westchester County — gradually increasing distraction levels as your dog's focus and reliability improve. We also use e-collar training where appropriate to communicate with your dog clearly even at a distance or in high-stimulation situations.
- Obedience around other dogs and people
- Focus and attention commands in busy environments
- Leash manners on crowded sidewalks and trails
- Recall under high distraction
- Impulse control around prey animals and moving objects
Our lifetime group classes serve as an ongoing high-distraction practice environment — a structured setting where your dog learns to stay focused with other dogs and handlers present.
